How Does it Work? Ink rub testers check the labels on digital and printed materials. For label testing, the device places a label into the machine, and then attaches a similar label to a weight. By rubbing the two labels together at a specific speed for a specific amount of time, the machine tests how well the label resists damage. In the textile industry, a rub test, which can be done on dry or wet fabric, determines the colorfastness of a fabric, which is integral to the process. When a fabric has good colorfastness, after being washed, it resists fading and degradation. Colorfastness to rubbing also shows how well a fabric resists stains.
What is abrasion testing? This test helps customers predict the lifetime of a material or coating. Testers use a heated weight to measure for abrasion. The term “rub resistance” refers to how well printed materials stand up to marks, scuffs, or smudges during packaging, shipping, and handling. These tests are performed in an environment created specifically to measure quality and performance of the material. Tests include using a two- or four-pound weight simultaneously, or with different receptors on each weight, to compare how different abrasive surfaces affect the sample.
